I eventually managed to get a Boot USB stick going, and got into the machine, downloaded some drivers from Dell, and managed to sort out video and USB only, then with Then my husband (who knows nothing about computers) started pushing buttons and somehow got it to a diagnostics screen and ran the "symptom tree". Danielle I got to the recovery console it gets to 50% then stops and my computer shuts off which it has been doing alot of lately.

I couldn't do anything on the blue screen like it said - press F8, etc. Reboot the machine and it should give you the option to boot from CD (the CD will start before your hard drive, thus skipping the hard drive error).

I'm thinking bad motherboard. Based on the error codes returned you would get an idea on whether the drive is dead or not, something that could be the case. I have used the disk (purple win XP disk) I have made sure my Bios is all in check with my cd loading first..
